ARKANSAS EAGLE FORUM HOSTS PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY. Eagle Forum's national president
spoke on "Education Reform and Early Childhood Education" at a luncheon
sponsored by Arkansas
Eagle Forum and state president Betsy Hagan on May 17. That evening, she spoke
again for Hot
Springs Eagle Forum at a beautiful event held at the new Hot Springs Country Clubhouse.

WHO'S THE FEMINIST IN THE SENATE RACE? Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright,
campaigning for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Erskine Bowles in North Carolina,
said, "I
definitely can vouch for the fact that Erskine is the feminist in this campaign."
Bowles is expected
to face Republican Elizabeth Dole in the November election. Stay tuned to see
if Mrs. Dole goes
after the anti-feminist vote or says that she, too, is a feminist.

SENATE APPROVES NATO EXPANSION. Congress sent President Bush a bill on May 17
that
endorses adding 7 countries to NATO: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Bulgaria and
Romania. The bill passed 85 to 6 in the Senate and 372-46 in the House. It's a
big-money
package to send U.S. taxpayers' dollars to those countries, with a promise to
defend borders that
they've been fighting over for centuries. Don't be surprised if the globalists
make more and more
use of NATO than the United Nations in their drive to diminish national sovereignty.

HOW ARE THEY TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY? Eagle Forum Education Center received
a recent e-mail from a concerned parent who had asked the Principal of his child's
school why
American History isn't taught in the schools. The Principal said, "They do
teach some American
history but there is too much to teach to get caught in just one area, like history
or geography.
History is taught from today back, instead of from the beginning up to today.
That way the kids get
the important things instead of a lot of old dead stuff. Jefferson, Washington,
Madison and all those
other guys especially Sam Adams were landed gentry and if the people hadn't forced
the bill of
rights into the Constitution, we'd all still be slaves or indentured servants.
The Constitution is a
document to be read in context with contemporary thought, not as some static old
document that
had meaning two hundred years ago." Is it any wonder that our Republic is
nearly lost?

BUSH TO CONTINUE BAN ON TRADE WITH CUBA. In a reply to former president Jimmy
Carter's widely publicized visit with Fidel Castro, President George W. Bush chose
the occasion
of a May 21 speech in Miami, where many Cuban immigrants reside, to proclaim the
United States'
continuing support for freedom and civil liberties for the people of Cuba, and
to declare, "Without
major steps by Cuba to open up its political system and its economic system, trade
with Cuba will
not help the Cuban people, it will merely enrich Castro and his cronies and prop
up their
dictatorship." Speaking directly to Castro, the President said, " For
43 years, every election in
Cuba has been a fraud and a sham. Mr. Castro, once just once show that you're
unafraid of
a real election." Washington Times, 5-21-02

PRIMARIES IN PENNSYLVANIA, ARKANSAS. In the May 21 Democratic primary to name
a
gubernatorial candidate in Pennsylvania, former Philadelphia mayor Edward G. Rendell
defeated
pro-life State Auditor Robert P. Casey, Jr. (son of the former governor Casey)
by a margin of 55-
45%. The incumbent, Mark Schweiker, who became governor when Tom Ridge was appointed
homeland security advisor, had chosen not to seek a full term. Rendell will oppose
Republican
Attorney General Mike Fisher in the fall. In a Republican primary contest in Arkansas,
state Rep.
Jim Bob Duggar failed in his attempt to defeat freshman Senator Tim Hutchinson,
who had been
considered vulnerable after his divorce and marriage to a former aide. Hutchinson
will face
Democrat Attorney General Mark Pryor in November. Washington Post, 5-22-02.

MORE JUDICIAL SCANDALS. The establishment media have widely reported and rejoiced
in a
May 14 decision by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, in the case of Grutter
v. Bollinger. The court
narrowly (5-4) approved racial and ethnic preferences in admissions by the University
of Michigan
Law School, where an applicant who is a member of a minority group is 234 times
more likely to
be admitted than a non-minority with identical scores and qualifications. (Many
believe the
Supreme Court will hear an appeal of this case, and finally clarify whether public
institutions may
practice affirmative action by giving racial preferences.)

GUN HISTORIAN'S FRAUD EXPOSED. Emory University history professor Michael Bellesiles's
book, Arming America published in October 2000, claims that private ownership
of guns was rare
in the early years of our history. It won the prestigious Bancroft Award, and
won the acclaim of
opponents of the right to bear arms, who said his research backs up their contention
that the
Second Amendment does not apply to private citizens. However, major portions of
Bellesile's
"research" have been discovered to have been a figment of his imagination.
According to Robert
Stacy McCain (Washington Times, 5-22-02) scholars "say that Mr. Bellesiles
misrepresented or
even fabricated historical records to support his contention that gun ownership
was rare in the
United States before the Civil War." For example, he asserted he had accessed
California court
records that experts say were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire
of 1906. He
claimed to have obtained data on gun ownership from probate records in the federal
archives at
East Point, GA; but there are no probate records there. One scholar says there
are hundreds of
errors in his book. Emory University has launched an internal investigation into
his research; and
the National Endowment for The Humanities has withdrawn its name from a fellowship
granted to
Bellesile by the Newberry Library in Chicago.

HOMESCHOOLER WINS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE. Ten-year-old Calvin McCarter of
Jenison, MI prevailed against a room full of mostly teenaged competitors to take
first place, winning
a $25,000 college scholarship. McCarter said he prefers being homeschooled because
he gets
more personal attention. His parents are homeschooling to give their children
a Christian education
"in an atmosphere where there is a love of learning." Another homeschooler,
14-year-old Erick
Miller of Kent, WA, took third place in the competition. (Associated Press, 5-22-02)

POLITICKLES
by F.R. Duplantier
GRADUATION DEITY
No religious beliefs were expressed
In his valedictorian address,
But he feigned an "achoo!"
And his classmates on cue
In unison shouted "God bless!"
